Special Olympics Saudi Arabia concluded the School Sports Champions League competitions in the Aseer and Tabuk regions as part of the School Sports Champions Project, implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Education. The event was attended by representatives from regional education administrations and Special Olympics Saudi Arabia, with the participation of students from special education schools.
Handball competitions were held in the Aseer region, while football competitions took place in the Tabuk region. Students from both intermediate and secondary school levels participated, with six schools and 44 students competing in Aseer, and eight schools and 64 students competing in Tabuk.
The School Sports Champions League represents the culmination of the first phase of the project, which was launched to promote sports participation among persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities within the educational environment. The project provides structured sports opportunities that contribute to the development of physical and social skills while encouraging greater participation in sports activities.
The first phase of the project engaged 429 students from 34 schools across the Aseer and Tabuk regions. In 2026, the project expanded to include 97 schools across five regions: Makkah, Madinah, Taif, Al Jouf, and Jazan, reaching 413 students. This expansion reflects the success of the project and its growing impact across regions of the Kingdom.
The project builds upon the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Special Olympics Saudi Arabia and the Ministry of Education in October 2025, which aims to strengthen collaboration in delivering sports programs within special education schools and providing students with intellectual and developmental disabilities access to quality sports opportunities that support their development and showcase their abilities.
Mr. Talal Alhumaidan, Director of Communications and Partnerships at Special Olympics Saudi Arabia, stated that the project represents a successful model of collaboration between the sports and education sectors. He noted that the partnership with the Ministry of Education has contributed to expanding sports programs and reaching a greater number of students across different regions of the Kingdom.
He added: “The School Sports Champions League is the result of the joint efforts made over the past period. We have witnessed the positive impact of sport in enhancing the participation of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and developing their skills within the school environment. We will continue working with the Ministry of Education to expand the project and reach more beneficiaries, contributing to the goals of empowerment and inclusion through sport.”
The event concluded with an awards ceremony honoring the winning schools and recognizing all participants, reflecting the spirit of positive competition and determination among the students while highlighting the project’s impact in supporting and empowering persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities through sport.
